The age old brand John Smedley has been manufacturing the finest knitwear since it’s conception around the beginning of the industrial revolution in 1784. The knitwear designer’s factory is based in Derbyshire in the heart of the British countryside and is the oldest factory of it’s kind in the world.
Four generations of family members, each being called John Smedley have run the Lea Mills since 1784. Nearly 400 employees in the Derbyshire factory make around 400,000 of the finest merino and cotton garments every year by hand. Unsurprisingly, the royal family have been wearing John Smedley for years, earning the brand a Royal Warrant document stating specifically that they have been “appointed into the place and quality of Manufacture of Fine Knitwear”.
